Neil Everett To Host 2023 Collegiate Track & Field/Cross Country Athlete Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony
NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) is pleased to announce that former longtime “SportsCenter” anchor Neil Everett will host the 2023 Collegiate Track & Field/Cross Country Athlete Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in September.
Everett, who was a fixture on the “SportsCenter” desk for 23 years, will emcee the event on Thursday, September 14, 2023, at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts in Eugene, Oregon. The ceremony begins at 6:30 pm PT and is free and open to the public.
The 61-year-old broadcaster is originally from the Pacific Northwest. He was born in Portland, Oregon and raised in Spokane, Washington. After starting his undergraduate degree at Willamette University, Everett transferred to the University of Oregon and graduated in 1984.
“Going to the U of O, track & field is in your bones in some form or another,” Everett said. “Now, it’s all about football – but back when I was at Oregon, the football team wasn’t the torchbearer – that was track & field.”
“The legend of Steve Prefontaine permeated everything. I saw that Pre was part of the inaugural class last year and looking at the class this year, I can’t wait to be amongst these legends, too.”
The 14-person Class of 2023 is star-studded. Together, they combined to win 70 national collegiate titles, set 39 world records, and capture eight Olympic/World Championships medals while in college. Athletes in this group competed as early as 1959 and as late as 2000.
The Collegiate Athlete Hall of Fame was established in 2022 to honor the best of the best in collegiate track & field and cross country. The Hall of Fame recognizes the achievements of those athletes who have left a lasting mark on their sport(s) during their time in college.
