Over the course of the next few days, we’ll see individual and team champions crowned in NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III at those respective meets in Albuquerque, New Mexico (Albuquerque Convention Center), Birmingham, Alabama (Birmingham CrossPlex) and Winston-Salem, North Carolina (JDL Fast Track).

What This Tells Us…
- The track & field gods have been kind to the top-ranked women’s team in four of the past five years and each of the past three: Arkansas in 2015 & 2019, Oregon in 2017 and Georgia in 2018. This bodes well for top-ranked LSU in 2020, but – as we know – anything can happen over the span of the two-day meet.
- The top-ranked men’s team in the National Rating Index hasn’t been as fortunate. Since 2014, only one No. 1 team has won the national title: Oregon back in 2016, when it also wrapped up a three-peat. That was the year where Edward Cheserek became one of the only men in NCAA DI history to complete the 3000-5000-DMR triple.
- The lowest-ranked teams that won national titles both belonged to Oregon. The Men of Oregon won the 2014 crown ranked No. 6, while the Women of Oregon played a starring role in 2013 as the fourth-ranked squad.

What This Tell Us…
- A top-ranked men’s team hasn’t won a national title since 2012. That was when Grand Canyon took home the trophy with a seven-point victory over Adams State. Since then, we’ve seen three No. 2s (Ashland in 2019, Tiffin in 2016, Saint Augustine’s in 2014), three No. 3s (Tiffin in 2017, Adams State in 2015, Saint Augustine’s in 2013) and one No. 5 top the podium (Abilene Christian in 2011).
- Like their NCAA Division I counterparts, the track & field gods have smiled favorably upon top-ranked women’s teams. Adams State (2019), West Texas A&M (2018) and Lincoln (Mo.) (2016) have all won national titles while ranked No. 1. Actually, there have only been three years since 2010 where the top-ranked women’s team didn’t win the national title: No. 3 Adams State in 2017, No. 2 Central Missouri in 2015 and No. 3 Adams State in 2014.

What This Tells Us…
- Top-ranked men’s teams ran the gauntlet from 2010 through 2016 as six of those seven winners topped the Pre-Championships Edition of the National Rating Index: North Central (Ill.) in 2010 and 2011, UW-La Crosse in 2013 and 2014 and UW-Eau Claire in 2015 and 2016. Since then, only one top-ranked team has shared the national title and that would be UW-La Crosse in 2017.
- Top-ranked women’s teams played Connect Four from 2010 to 2013 with UW-Oshkosh and Wartburg each winning a pair. Then from 2014 to 2019, only two top-ranked women’s teams did the honors with UW-La Crosse in 2015 and Washington (Mo.) in 2017.
